Catalogue and booklet paper stock

Catalogues, booklets and magazines are normally printed on 150gsm Gloss stock.

Please note that the Gloss part of the stock refers to a coating that has been placed upon the paper. If you catalogue will mostly consist of writing, then the paper will seem quite shiny and it will reflect the light.
However, if you have a lot of background colour, logos or images, then the paper will not appear shiny at all — rather, the Gloss part of the stock will make the colours, logos or images appear richer.

AllPrinting has a strong preference for our 150gsm Gloss stocks:

Other stocks that are used include:

We suggest that you do NOT print any booklet or catalogue on our 115gsm Gloss — a 100% sustainable plantation stock, and we suggest this for one simple reason; our 150gsm Gloss stock has a certain 'weight' that suggests quality, whereas the 115gsm Gloss stock is light and lacks any sense of quality. Also, the 150gsm Gloss stock is almost the same price as the inferior 115gsm Gloss stock.

Catalogues and booklets, and multiple designs

You may purchase up to ten different designs on the one booklet or catalogue order. However, all design must be ordered in equal numbers.

Folding and binding

All A4, A5, A6 and DL booklets and catalogues are colated, folded, and then saddle-stitched (i.e.: stapled) along the spine.

Presenting the artwork for your catalogue or booklet

When you present a file to AllPrinting, please do NOT impose the file. An imposed file is when you match up the pages so that AllPrinting can send the file directly to a press. The way to present the file is to have each page of the booklet as a separate page, and have those pages in order.

This matter is displayed in the below images.

Let us assume you want a simple 4-page booklet that will consist of a front cover, inside-left page, inside-right page, and a back cover (see below images).

An imposed file would match up the outside cover, and the inside pages (see below).

The above imposed pages is NOT the best way to present files to us, as we might need to adjust the pages for pressing, and it can be difficult to adjust imposed files. For instance, with a very thick booklet, the outside cover needs to be slightly larger that the normal size.

We prefer it if you provide each page on an page. See below:

AllPrinting can easily adjust pages that are supplied in the above manner.

Why bleeds are important when printing catalogues and booklets

If your file is going to have any background colours, images or text that will be printing right to the very edge of the page, then please make sure that all pages have bleeds.
The greatest advantage of understanding bleeds are:

  • There is a 35-40% chance that your job will have problems if you do not understand bleeds. Alternately;
  • There is a 60-65% chance that your job will not have a single problem if you do understand bleeds.

Outlining fonts in your booklet printing file

Fonts can be a problem. Specifically, AllPrinting might not have the fonts that you use, or might not be licensed to use any font that you embed.
The easiest way to solve any font problem is to simply get rid of the fonts. This is easily done: you outline the fonts ("convert to curves) in some programs).
We will then received your file, and we will NOT have to worry about adjusting a file and not having the correct font.

Outlining fonts has one huge advantage for you — your booklet printing job will proceed through the 'pre-production' phase much faster; so, your booklet printing job will get printed faster too.

How to set up your booklet printing file

We have a page that contains some general information on how to set up a booklet printing file. We also have some pages that are devoted to some specific software packages:
